Driver's immigration status checked two days after fatal big rig crash

Florida Highway Patrol troopers did not inquire about the immigration status of the driver involved in a fatal tractor-trailer crash on the Turnpike until two days after the incident. Governor Ron DeSantis referred to the driver as an "illegal immigrant" and used the case to emphasize the importance of enforcing immigration laws. The delay in checking the driver's immigration status has raised concerns about the actions of the troopers, who are authorized to enforce federal immigration laws. The driver, Harjinder Singh, is facing charges of vehicular homicide and manslaughter for the crash that occurred when he made an abrupt U-turn on the highway, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. Singh, who holds a valid commercial driver's license from California, was found to have entered the country illegally in 2018. It was not until August 14 that troopers consulted Immigration and Customs Enforcement and learned of Singh's immigration status. Singh is currently in custody, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
