Driver who led troopers on chase through Rochester dies in fiery head-on crash, police say
Rochester, N.Y. — A driver who led troopers on a chase across the city Friday died in a fiery crash in the Maplewood neighborhood, according to New York State Police. Trooper Lynnea Crane said police attempted to make a traffic stop at Hudson Avenue and Avenue D for a violation, but the driver failed to comply. Crane said the car was southbound on Lake Avenue shortly before 10:15 a.m. when it became partially disabled. Police deployed spike strips that fully disabled the car, which then sideswiped an SUV before striking an oncoming Jeep. The car became engulfed in flames. Crane said troopers were unable to put out the fire or remove the trapped driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were working to identify him. Crane said three people in the Jeep were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The sole occupant of the sideswiped SUV was not injured. It was unclear how fast the car was traveling during the chase. "When we decide to pursue a vehicle, there's a lot that goes into it," Crane said. "Public safety the No. 1 priority for us, so troopers are taught to reassess and evaluate every moment of that pursuit. In addition to following that suspect, we have to know the speed, we need to know how much traffic there is, if it's light traffic (or) heavy traffic. How fast they're going is a big deal for us, so we have to continuously evaluate that." This is a developing story.
