Driver who caused deadly crash while using phone sentenced to jail and probation
A 28-year-old woman, who claimed she was using her phone's GPS when she ran a red light and caused a fatal crash in Macomb County last year, has received her sentence. Courtney Ellise Niezgoda ran a red light at 32 Mile in Washington Township on Feb. 12, 2024, leading to the death of 63-year-old Tina Yaney. Niezgoda pleaded no contest to reckless driving causing death and has been sentenced to three years of probation, with the first eight months to be served in jail. In addition, she is required to complete 100 hours of community service as part of her sentence. Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido highlighted that this case emphasizes the severe consequences of irresponsible decisions on the road and their impact on lives.
