
Driver wanted after former McDowell County police chief and son die in car accident
WAR, W.Va. (WVNS) — A former police chief in McDowell County and his son died in a car accident on Thursday, and an arrest warrant has been issued for their alleged killer. According to the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, Richard Lee Dillon Sr., the former police chief of War, and his son Richard Lee Dillon Jr., both of Bluefield, West Virginia, died after a pickup truck hit them head-on while driving on State Route 16 near Squire. The driver of the car that the Dillons were in, a woman, suffered significant injuries and remains in the hospital. Both the McDowell County Sheriff's Office and the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police responded and took over the investigation. Sergeant Martin with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office told 12 News' Beckley-area affiliate, WVNS, that the driver of the pickup truck, identified as Brandon Scott Dunford, allegedly tried to pass in a no-passing zone while speeding when the two cars collided. An arrest warrant was issued for Dunford, whose picture was provided to WVNS by the Sheriff's Office. Dunford is facing charges of failure to maintain, reckless driving, passing in a no-passing zone, and two counts of negligent homicide.
