Driver to face charges for 2023 Beltway crash that resulted in deaths of 6 workers

A driver involved in a fatal Beltway crash in 2023 is expected to enter guilty or Alford pleas in court next week, as confirmed by the defendant during a hearing. In the tragic accident that occurred in March 2023, six construction workers lost their lives when one of the vehicles involved in the crash was propelled over a jersey wall and into a work zone. Following the incident, the individual named Lea, who sustained serious injuries, surrendered to authorities in connection with the crash in June 2023. The collision was between Lea's Acura and a Volkswagen Jetta driven by Melachi Brown. Brown, who received an 18-month prison sentence in 2024 as part of a plea deal, was involved in the crash. During the recent court appearance, Lea expressed intentions to plead guilty to all six counts of negligent manslaughter and accepted the plea offer put forth by the state. The state is proposing a sentence of 10 years with all but four years suspended for each count, to be served consecutively. The NTSB report released in October 2024 highlighted speed as the primary factor in the accident, with both drivers exceeding 120 mph. A plea hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning to allow relatives of the victims, who were planning to attend the trial starting Monday, to be present. Additionally, one victim's family has filed a lawsuit against Maryland and the construction company, claiming that the work site was not adequately safe.
