Driver suspected of driving under the influence hits police car in Atlanta
A driver suspected of being under the influence crashed into an Atlanta police car on Tuesday evening, according to officials. The incident occurred at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Peachtree Battle Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a black Mercedes GLE blocking traffic and a patrol car with its airbags deployed. The driver of the Mercedes, identified as James Rankin, displayed signs of impairment, such as a slurred voice and the smell of alcohol. Rankin refused to participate in field sobriety tests, and as a result, officers obtained a warrant to conduct a blood test at a hospital. Rankin faces multiple charges, including failure to yield when turning left, DUI per se, DUI less safe, and reckless driving. He was taken into custody and the blood sample was sent for analysis by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
