Driver sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison for deadly I-696 wrong-way collision

A man involved in a deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 696 in Roseville, Michigan has been sentenced to a long prison term, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's office. Stephano Ramon Nabors, 42, was given a 30 to 50-year prison sentence by the Macomb County Circuit Court on Thursday. Nabors was convicted in August following a jury trial on charges including second-degree murder, driving while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, driving with a suspended license causing death, and fleeing from police. The Prosecutor, Peter J. Lucido, emphasized the seriousness of the conviction and urged Michigan lawmakers to create stronger laws addressing the dangers posed by drivers who refuse to pull over for law enforcement. The incident leading to these charges occurred on May 5, 2023, when Nabors caused a collision on the interstate resulting in a fatality. Lucido announced that the prosecutor's office will no longer offer reduced charge pleas for cases involving fleeing and eluding incidents, in an effort to deter such behavior and protect innocent lives.
