Driver sentenced to 30 days in 2021 crash that led to Drury student's death.

In Springfield, Missouri, a Greene County judge has given Marjorie Dewitt of Ozark a 30-day jail sentence for her involvement in the 2021 accident that led to the death of 21-year-old Mercedes Luna. Dewitt accepted an Alford plea deal for first-degree involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, not admitting guilt but acknowledging there was enough evidence to likely convict her. Before the trial was set to start on July 21, an agreement was reached. Court records show that on May 7, 2021, Dewitt was trying to pass a FedEx truck on State Highway 125 in Greene County, causing Luna to swerve into a ditch to avoid a collision. Luna then lost control and was struck by the FedEx truck, resulting in her tragic death as she was on her way to Rogersville where she worked as a student-teacher at Drury University. Dewitt surrendered to authorities with her lawyer on November 4, 2021, and pleaded not guilty.
