Driver sentenced for crash that killed 6 Idaho farm workers

In Idaho Falls, a 27-year-old man named Luis Garcia-Diaz was recently sentenced to 12 to 30 years in prison by District Judge Dane Watkins Jr. for causing a fatal crash that took the lives of six individuals in May 2024. The victims were Abel Mejía Martínez, Pedro Manuel Alcantar Mejía, Brandon Ponce Gallegos, Jose Guadalupe Sánchez Medina, Luis Enrique Sereno Perez, and Javier Gomez Alcantar. Garcia-Diaz, a Colombian citizen, had also been given a federal immigration detainer. The tragic incident happened on U.S. Highway 20 near the Lindsay Boulevard exit in Idaho Falls, where Garcia-Diaz's Dodge Ram pickup collided with a Chevrolet passenger van carrying 14 passengers and the driver. Unfortunately, all passengers, who were agricultural workers from Mexico on H-2A Temporary Agricultural Worker visas, suffered injuries or lost their lives. Prosecutors dropped some charges after Garcia-Diaz pleaded guilty to two felony vehicular manslaughter charges in June. During the hearing, conducted over Zoom and attended by fourteen individuals, including Garcia-Diaz's family and friends, discussions revolved around determining an appropriate prison term for his actions.
