Driver punished for hit-and-run accident resulting in teen's death and family members' injuries
In a sentencing decision made on Friday, a judge ruled that a driver involved in a fatal street racing incident will be serving seven years in prison. The driver, Erik Hernandez-Escobar, 20, was found guilty of several charges stemming from the accident that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old and injuries to three family members. The crash occurred at the intersection of 58th Avenue and Holly Street in Commerce City on Oct. 6, 2024. During the emotional sentencing hearing, the victim's family members shared their heartbreak and memories of their lost loved one. Hernandez-Escobar was confirmed to have been at the crash site at the time and later fled the scene, further worsening the tragic situation. The defendant's co-defendants are also facing charges related to the crash and will be arraigned in October.
