Driver not blamed for crash that resulted in death of 10-year-old Leawood boy
The Leawood Police Department has concluded that the driver's actions did not play a role in the tragic crash that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old boy on Oct. 13. Following interviews with the driver, who cooperated fully and remained on the scene, as well as various eyewitness accounts, and an analysis of physical evidence and available video footage, it was determined that the driver was not at fault. The incident involved Duke Ommert, a 4th-grade student at Brookwood Elementary School, who was wearing a helmet and riding an e-scooter when he was hit by a vehicle while crossing Lee Boulevard. Despite wearing protective gear, Duke succumbed to his injuries two days later at a local hospital. The Leawood Police Department expressed condolences for the loss and reminded all road users to remain vigilant and considerate of each other while navigating roadways.
