Driver in deadly Ashwaubenon crash that killed a teenager officially charged with homicide

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) - A 69-year-old Luxemburg man faces two charges relating to a fatal crash on Friday night in Ashwaubenon that left a teenage girl dead and her father in the hospital. A criminal complaint filed against Douglas Proehl alleges that he was under the influence when he sped through a red light and struck a vehicle attempting to complete a left turn onto Holmgren Way off Lombardi Avenue. Proehl is charged with the following: On Friday, January 30, around 5 p.m., an officer was sent to a possible crash at Lombardi Avenue and Holmgren Way and arrived within seconds of the call. A traffic light at the scene was down, with a dark Dodge pickup truck sustaining front-end damage and a silver sedan with significant damage on the front end and passenger side. The sedan was driven by a 45-year-old man, with his 17-year-old daughter in the passenger seat at the time of the crash. Both were hospitalized, and the 17-year-old later died from life-threatening injuries at the hospital. Video footage of the crash showed the victim's vehicle in the left-turn-only lane heading westbound on Lombardi Avenue, in the middle of the intersection, waiting to complete the turn. A witness who was stopped at the intersection reportedly told police that they also saw the truck go through a red light, hearing a loud roaring like a 'revving engine.' Proehl told police that he had two beers about 90 minutes before the crash occurred at a restaurant. According to the complaint, Proehl started to slur his words and an alcoholic odor was evident. The complaint claims that Proehl continued to talk about his truck to the authorities and seemed more concerned about how his truck was involved in the incident. When Proehl was brought back to the station, he reportedly asked for an attorney. His blood was drawn following a search warrant. Proehl was in court on Tuesday afternoon and had his cash bond set at $500,000.
