Driver in Asheboro survives crash witnesses thought was fatal: ‘Looked like something out of a movie’
ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- A driver survived a crash in Asheboro that many witnesses thought was a tragedy. Byron Clegg says he heard a loud noise while working in Asheboro on Tuesday afternoon. "I heard a loud boom ... When I heard the loud boom, I went and looked," Clegg said. The noise Clegg heard was a tractor-trailer hauling steel beams off East Dixie Drive in Asheboro.Asheboro police say the driver hit the brakes, which caused the straps to break and the beams to pierce through the cab of the vehicle. "Just hoping the driver was OK ... It looked like something out of a movie," Clegg said. Saylah Arnold said she was working at the Chili's off the 1200 block of East Dixie Drive when she noticed her customers looking out the window. "I walked out ... and said, 'Oh, Lord. That's not going to end pretty,'" Arnold said. Asheboro Fire Station 1 responded. Battalion Chief Brian Hussey said when he arrived on the scene, he feared for the worst. "When I saw the metal beams ... I expected him to be hurt pretty bad," Hussey said. Despite the gaping hole seen inside the truck, the driver was untouched. "The driver was pretty lucky because the metal beams were probably 16-18 inches from his head," Hussey said Hussey says when he spoke with the driver afterwards, the driver wasn't shaken up. Instead, he credited faith with being able to see another day. "He said he thanked God, and he prayed every day, and he said it worked today … for sure," Hussey said Asheboro police did not name the driver but said a full report on what happened is expected to be released Wednesday.
