Driver faces OWI after speedy crash that flipped pontoon, killing man inside

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - A driver is accused of speeding and being intoxicated Saturday while hauling a boat that flipped -- and a man inside the boat later died. Shortly after 7 p.m. on the Fourth of July, deputies with the Steuben County Sheriff's Department responded to a crash just outside Angola on Metz Road near the intersection with U.S. 20. Police at the scene found bystanders performing CPR on a man with a head injury who had been trapped under the pontoon. The initial investigation revealed a man identified as 22-year-old Chase Gustwiller from Defiance, Ohio had been driving a pickup truck with a trailer carrying the pontoon. When Gustwiller turned from U.S. 20 onto Metz Road, he was allegedly driving so fast that the boat fell off the trailer and eventually flipped over. But someone was inside the boat the whole time. He was later identified as 20-year-old Cameron Laney from Sherwood, Ohio, according to the release. He'd been thrown off when the pontoon flipped but then became trapped under it. Medics took over for the bystanders who'd been trying to aid him, but the next morning, Laney died from his injuries. Police launched an OWI investigation, noting the driver appeared to be impaired. Gustwiller was booked into the Steuben County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death - a Level 4 felony - and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor. Gustwiller was released from jail after posting the $10,000 surety bond, according to the release.
