Driver charged with DUI in crash that resulted in death of police officer and 19-year-old
A La Mesa police officer and a 19-year-old man were tragically killed in a series of crashes on the eastbound lanes of I-8 near the 15 freeway. The driver responsible, identified as Antonio Abel Alcantar, 38, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The officer, Lauren Craven, had been providing life-saving assistance to the 19-year-old victim, De'Veonte Morris, when Alcantar's Toyota Camry struck them. Both Craven and Morris died at the scene. Alcantar sustained injuries, was treated at a local hospital, and subsequently arrested for DUI. Other individuals involved in the crashes suffered minor to moderate injuries and were also taken to local hospitals. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and asks anyone with information to contact them at 858-293-6000.
