Driver arrested after crash that injured assistant attorney general

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island assistant attorney general was hurt in a crash late Wednesday night in Providence. The crash happened just after 11 p.m. in the area of Dave Gavitt Way. According to the R.I. Attorney General's Office, a driver who was fleeing from Providence police ran a red light and collided with Assistant AG Steve Regine's vehicle. Regine was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after the crash, but the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. Josh Estrella, a spokesperson for the city of Providence, identified the driver as 30-year-old Antonio Cueva. Estrella said a Providence officer noticed a "pursued vehicle operating at a high rate of speed on Westminster Street without headlights or the proper use of turn signals." Cueva then continued onto Broadway before hitting Regine's vehicle at the intersection with Dave Gavitt Way, according to Estrella. Cueva's car caught fire as a result, but officials said he wasn't seriously hurt. The police report obtained by 12 News says Cueva was arrested on charges of driving to endanger resulting in personal injury, reckless driving, driving without consent of owner, and violation of a no-contact order. Court records show he was out on bail for domestic violence-related charges. Dave Gavitt Way was blocked off with crime scene tape between Broadway and Atwells Avenue after the crash. Providence police and Rhode Island State Police were both at the scene. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
