Driver accused of causing deadly accident; ICE holds detainment request.

A man was killed in a tragic crash in Avoyelles Parish, resulting in the arrest of a suspect who is now being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The collision took place on Louisiana Highway 1 near the Echo community. A northbound 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Romero H. Roberto veered off the road and struck a 2013 Kubota lawn mower being operated by Rickey G. Maddox. Despite being injured, Maddox later passed away at a local hospital. Roberto, who was not wearing a seat belt, was unharmed. Authorities suspect impairment played a role in the crash and have taken toxicology samples for analysis. Roberto was arrested the following day and faces charges including vehicular homicide, first-offense DWI, careless operation, no driver’s license, and an expired license plate. He is being held in the Avoyelles Parish Detention Center and has an immigration detainer placed on him by ICE. Roberto, referred to as Romero-Hernandez by DHS, is a Mexican national who entered the U.S. at an unknown time and location. The Department of Homeland Security aims to ensure he is not released back into the community following legal proceedings. The case is still being investigated by Louisiana State Police.
