Driver accused in deadly bike accident at intersection in GR

A man from Wyoming has been charged with a misdemeanor in connection with a crash that led to the death of a bicyclist near downtown Grand Rapids earlier this year. The victim, Steve Dowhan, was tragically killed on January 11, 2025, while riding his bicycle on Pearl Street by the Ford Museum. The driver involved in the incident, Kaleb Stressman-Pilot, has been accused by Kent County prosecutors of a moving violation causing death. Despite investigations showing that the driver was under the legal alcohol limit at the time of the crash, evidence indicated impairment. If convicted, the driver could face up to a year in jail and a one-year license suspension. Friends and colleagues of Steve Dowhan are still working to find a permanent spot for a ghost bike tribute in his honor, as local regulations prohibit memorials in public areas. The tribute currently resides at a Bridge Street building, reflecting Dowhan's dedication to safety and his love for music and culture. Efforts continue to secure more downtown parking to honor Dowhan's legacy as someone who advocated for worker safety.
