Deputies: Motorcyclist tried to pass minivan before deadly crash in Gaines Township
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say they're still investigating a deadly crash that happened in Gaines Township over the weekend. The crash happened just after 5:20 p.m. Sunday on Kalamazoo Avenue SE north of 100th Street SE. The Kent County Sheriff's Office did not immediately release details about what led up to the crash, but on Wednesday, deputies shared more information. Investigators say they believe the motorcyclist, who was heading north on Kalamazoo Avenue, was driving quickly when the crash happened. The motorcyclist was trying to pass a northbound minivan that was making a left turn, according to the sheriff's office. The motorcyclist, a 26-year-old Allendale man, died of his injuries, deputies say. His name was not released Wednesday. The 41-year-old Caledonia woman driving the minivan had minor injuries. Deputies say the Allendale man was wearing a helmet. They don't believe alcohol was involved in the crash. "We extend our condolences to the family and friends impacted by this tragic incident," the sheriff's office wrote Sunday in a release.
