Dense Fog, Missed Turn Leads To Fatal Crash In Lancaster County: Coroner

A dense fog crash at a rural intersection left a woman dead Tuesday morning, authorities said. Alice V. Reich, 87, of New Providence, was killed in a two-vehicle collision at Holtwood and Penny roads in Drumore Township at 9:21 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, according to Pennsylvania State Police and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office. Reich was driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla west on Holtwood Road when she missed a turn and attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection to travel east, police explained. As she turned, she pulled into the path of a westbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado driver attempted to brake and swerve left, but Reich continued into its path, police said. The front right bumper of the truck struck the front left door of the Corolla. After impact, Reich’s vehicle traveled northwest, striking a mailbox on the north side of the roadway before coming to rest facing west, according to troopers. The Silverado veered off the road and came to a stop in a field. Dense fog conditions were present at the time of the crash, investigators noted. Reich was transported by Lancaster EMS Association to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office determined she died from multiple traumatic injuries. Her manner of death was ruled an accident. A 71-year-old passenger in the Corolla from Holtwood, was also transported to Lancaster General Hospital with suspected minor injuries, according to police. The 76-year-old Silverado driver of Kemblesville was not injured, troopers said. Police said Reich was wearing a lap and shoulder belt at the time of the crash. Troopers noted a "primary violation of limitations on turning around – general rule" in the investigation. No charges were listed in the public report. The crash remains under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police. Details about Reich’s life were not immediately available.
