
Demands for change after deadly Kalihi incident
A tragic incident occurred on Monday evening, Sept. 22 in Kalihi, Oahu, where a 58-year-old woman lost her life at the intersection of Kokea and North School Street. The driver involved in the accident fled the scene. The area around the intersection, which includes houses, a bus stop, a 21 Mart, ongoing construction, and a pedestrian crossing, has prompted calls for safety improvements from local residents. Among them is Donald Guerrero, a long-term resident, who highlighted the need for changes like speed humps, raised crosswalks, and better lighting for increased safety. Simeone Rojas from the Kalihi Valley Neighborhood Board also stressed the importance of adhering to speed limits to prevent accidents in the area, which has been known for its hazards. Honolulu City Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam echoed the community's concerns and urged for immediate action to enhance pedestrian safety. The incident marked Oahu's 63rd traffic fatality of the year.
