Decatur Police Department discusses intersection safety post deadly collision

In Decatur, Illinois, two car accidents occurred back-to-back at the same intersection, prompting the Decatur Police Department to urge drivers to be more attentive. The first crash occurred when a 72-year-old driver was hit by another car running a red light at the busy corner of Mound Avenue and North Water Street. The victim, Gay Rolofson, sustained injuries, while the other driver was critically injured. The following day, at the same location, a driver struck a pedestrian while making a left turn onto East Mound. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital. Lieutenant Ben Massey emphasized the importance of focusing on the road, especially at intersections. He reminded drivers to proceed cautiously through green lights, checking thoroughly before entering the intersection to avoid potential accidents. Massey also emphasized following pedestrian safety measures, including using crosswalks and not crossing diagonally. Pedestrians were advised to remain vigilant, not solely relying on others to ensure their safety.
