Death toll in UPS plane crash rises to 15 with scrapyard worker's Christmas Day passing
A man who was injured in the UPS cargo plane crash in Kentucky last month passed away on Christmas Day, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 15. Alain Rodriguez Colina was an employee at a scrapyard that was severely impacted by the crash, which occurred as the cargo plane, carrying fuel for a flight to Hawaii, collided with businesses near Louisville's airport on November 4. The heartbreaking news of Colina's death was shared by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg on social media. The mayor expressed condolences and highlighted Colina as the 15th victim of the UPS Flight 2976 accident. The tragic incident also took the lives of three other employees and customers at the scrapyard. Investigators revealed that cracks were found in the engine mount of the UPS plane, leading to the plane's left engine detaching and causing the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board identified safety concerns and an attorney later filed wrongful death lawsuits alleging lack of proper maintenance of the aircraft. UPS and General Electric, the engine maker, emphasized the importance of safety in response to the ongoing federal investigation. Following the crash, the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all MD-11s, which had been exclusively used for cargo transport for over a decade.
