Death at 71 of Kool & the Gang member Michael Sumler in car accident
Longtime member of the iconic R&B and funk band Kool & the Gang, Michael Sumler, has passed away at the age of 71. Sumler, who initially served as the band's wardrobe valet before becoming a backing vocalist and performer on stage, tragically lost his life in a car crash in Mableton, Georgia. The collision, which occurred on Veterans Memorial Highway west of Buckner Road around 11:35 PM, involved a 33-year-old driver named Khary Weaver, who thankfully escaped injury. The accident is currently under investigation by authorities. Kool & the Gang's spokesperson expressed their deep sorrow over Sumler's passing, remembering him as a valued team member from 2000 to 2015 who contributed to the band's performances and events. Sumler's death occurred just one year after the group celebrated their 60th anniversary. Their co-founder Robert "Kool" Bell reflected on the band's longevity and continued success in an interview earlier this year, recalling the band's evolution from their jazz and soul roots to becoming the Grammy-winning legends they are today.
