Deadly secondary collision on I-25 in southern Colorado

The Colorado State Patrol has reported a fatality in one of the two accidents that happened in the same spot on I-25 earlier today. The initial collision occurred when a semi slowed down at approximately 7:32 a.m. near mile marker 40 due to sun glare and was hit from behind by a box truck. The box truck driver sustained moderate injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital. A second crash occurred shortly afterwards between a Ford F250 and two Hyundai vehicles. Tragically, the driver of the Ford did not survive the accident. The driver of the Hyundai was sent to a local hospital for treatment; however, the severity of their injuries is not yet known. Both directions of I-25 were closed for about two hours for cleanup and investigation, with northbound traffic reopening at 9:12 a.m. Southbound lanes remain shut down at the moment, with a detour in place for drivers. Colorado State Patrol is continuing the investigation and anticipates the closure lasting several more hours.
