Deadly Congo boat accident claims over 100 lives in second tragedy this week
Two tragic boat incidents occurred this week in northwestern Congo, resulting in the death of at least 193 individuals and numerous others missing, as authorities and state media reported on Friday. The two accidents took place in the Equateur province about 150 kilometers apart, with one incident involving a boat catching fire and sinking on Thursday along the Congo River in Lukolela territory. Nearly 500 passengers were on board, and 209 survivors were successfully rescued. The previous day, a motorized boat overturned in Basankusu territory, claiming the lives of at least 86 individuals, primarily students. The causes of the accidents were not immediately clear, and it remains uncertain if rescue operations are ongoing. The incidents were believed to be caused by improper loading and night navigation, as reported by state media and local sources. The lack of safety measures, overloaded vessels, and nighttime travel have contributed to the increased frequency of such tragedies in the region.
