Deadly Congo Boat Accident Claims Over 100 Lives
In another tragic incident, a boat carrying nearly 500 passengers caught fire and overturned on the Congo River in the Equateur Province's Lukolela territory, resulting in the loss of 107 lives with 146 individuals still unaccounted for. This marks the second fatal boat accident in the region within a week, with the previous one claiming 86 lives and leaving several missing in the province's Basankusu territory. The cause of these accidents remains unclear, although preliminary reports suggest issues such as improper loading and night navigation. Unfortunately, the capsizing of boats has become distressingly common in Congo due to the use of overcrowded and poorly maintained vessels for transportation, often without proper safety measures like life jackets. The incidents have led to a pressing need for better maritime safety practices to prevent further tragedies.
