Deadly bus crash claims lives of over 70 deported Afghans, including 17 children

At least 75 people, including 17 children, lost their lives in a tragic traffic accident in Afghanistan involving a bus carrying migrants deported from Iran. The bus, with 73 Afghan migrants onboard, collided with a motorbike and another vehicle in Herat province near the Iranian border, causing a fatal fire due to the vehicles carrying fuel. Sadly, all passengers on the bus, mostly burnt to death, including 17 children, in addition to two individuals from the other vehicles. Afghan refugees, who had returned from Iran due to recent crackdowns on illegal residents in both Iran and Pakistan, are facing a tragic ordeal following the accident. The situation is further complicated by the systemic discrimination and violence faced by Afghan migrants in both countries, which has led to a surge of returns to Afghanistan, creating a severe human rights crisis. Traffic accidents are prevalent in Afghanistan due to poor road conditions and weak enforcement of traffic regulations. The returnees, comprising millions, are struggling with basic services in Afghanistan, with many reliant on humanitarian aid amid cuts in international funding. Additionally, thousands of Afghans in the United States are at risk of deportation due to recent legal decisions indicating improved conditions in their homeland.
