Cyclist dies in pre-dawn multi-vehicle collision in South LA
A tragic incident occurred in Vermont Square overnight where a person riding a bicycle lost their life in a multi-vehicle crash. The LAPD responded to reports of the accident at the intersection of West Vernon Avenue and South Figueroa Street around 1 a.m. Sunday. Details are still being investigated, but footage from the scene revealed several damaged vehicles and debris scattered nearby. A man was seen being transported on a stretcher while a crowd gathered at the site, and another angle showed a covered body on the roadway. The LAPD later disclosed that the bicyclist, a 29-year-old man, was fatally struck by a vehicle as he rode across Figueroa. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was hospitalized in critical condition. The community quickly responded to the loud noise of the crash, assisting those involved even before emergency services arrived. One resident, Gonzalo Almaraz, shared his account of helping to free a person trapped under a vehicle. Crashes are unfortunately common in the neighborhood, affecting families with children. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and the road was reopened by 7 a.m. Sunday.
