Cyclist, 79, killed in bike accident in Kihei

A 79-year-old man from Kihei has tragically passed away after a pickup truck collided with him while he was riding his e-bike earlier in the week. The incident occurred at the intersection of Kanani Road and Auhana Road in Kihei on Wednesday morning. The collision resulted in critical injuries to the bicyclist, who was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and sadly succumbed to his injuries on Friday. The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old man from Kihei, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The driver was arrested for negligent injury in the first degree and was later released as the investigation continues. The victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, while the truck's occupants were wearing seatbelts. Speed was not a contributing factor in the collision, and it has not been determined if drugs or alcohol were involved. This incident marks the 14th traffic fatality in Maui County for 2025, as compared to 13 fatalities at the same point last year.
