Criticism over UK police for failing to arrest US diplomat's wife in deadly accident
An independent review conducted in the UK criticized the police for not arresting a US diplomat's wife who was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a British teenager in 2019. The incident, which led to a diplomatic dispute between the UK and the US and a meeting between the victim's family and President Donald Trump, occurred when Anne Sacoolas, driving on the wrong side of the road, hit Harry Dunn outside a US military base in Northamptonshire. Despite claiming diplomatic immunity, she left the country shortly after the accident. The review found that the decision not to arrest Sacoolas was partially based on her state of shock, even though the officers believed the victim's injuries were survivable. The review also criticized the former chief of the Northamptonshire force for his handling of the case, which negatively impacted the investigation and trust between the parties involved. After returning to the US, Sacoolas refused to return to the UK for court proceedings, eventually pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving via video link and receiving a suspended prison sentence. Dunn's mother expressed disappointment in the review, stating that the family was let down by those they trusted.
