Emergency officials and first responders in Batavia, New York have confirmed that a significant pile-up on the Thruway involved more than 100 vehicles. East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Chief Don Newton Jr. expressed gratitude that everyone involved was able to walk away from what could have been a much worse accident. Genesee County Emergency Management and the East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department shared details at an exclusive press conference for News 4 about the chaotic scene they encountered, with vehicles in various states of damage and disarray. The crash, which took place near Exit 48 on the 90 in Batavia, stretched over a mile-and-a-half and included a wide range of vehicle types, from tractor-trailers to passenger cars. Emergency crews had to work with the State to clear the numerous vehicles involved, while bystanders with operational vehicles assisted those in need. The closure of the Thruway led to traffic being diverted to local roads, causing additional accidents. This situation placed a strain on the community, with local areas like Batavia and Pembroke experiencing multiple related crashes. Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the causes of the accident.
