Crash on I-64 in Norfolk leaves one dead; another in custody, says VSP

Virginia State Police responded to a fatal crash on I-64 in Norfolk on Saturday, according to a press release from the authorities. The incident occurred in the eastbound lanes near the exit at Northampton Boulevard (Exit 282) around 6:30 p.m.The crash involved two vehicles. State Police said Devon Acevero, 25, was driving a 2005 BMW at a high rate of speed when he lost control, ran off the roadway and struck the jersey wall. The BMW then crossed all lanes of traffic before crashing with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee. The crash resulted in the Jeep rolling over several times and coming to rest off the roadway, state police said.Acevero and his passenger were both uninjured in the crash, according to authorities. The driver of the Jeep was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger and mother-in-law, 70-year-old Paulette Angela Chambers, of Virginia Beach, died at the scene.Acevero was determined to be under the influence, and upon consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney, he will be charged with DUI Manslaughter, Virginia State Police stated. Acevero is currently at Norfolk City Jail.Due to the ongoing investigation, eastbound lanes in the area remain shut down.
