Crash on Edison Bridge Involving Garbage Truck and 7 Other Vehicles: OSHP

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking into a multi-vehicle collision that caused significant injuries and led to the closure of State Route 2 in Erie County for several hours on Tuesday. The incident occurred on the Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge over the Sandusky Bay at approximately 3:30 p.m. A 47-year-old man from Vickery was driving a garbage truck for Rumpke Transportation Company LLC when he encountered heavy traffic on the bridge due to a construction lane change. The truck driver collided with multiple vehicles on the bridge, including a Toyota Camry, a Kia Soul, two Mercedes Benz vehicles, a GMC Yukon, a GMC Terrain, and a Ford Escape. The details of the driver injuries and the sequence of events are currently unknown, but the highway patrol has classified the crash as a "serious injury crash." Although seat belts were worn by all drivers involved, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the accident. The Ohio Department of Transportation reported that State Route 2 was shut down for 2.2 miles in both directions beyond State Route 269/Danbury Road because of the collision. By 7 p.m., the bridge had reopened. Charges have not yet been brought in relation to the crash as the investigation continues.
