Court appearance for suspect in DUI crash leading to death of unborn baby
Maximilliano Chavez, the individual accused in a fatal DUI crash that resulted in the loss of an unborn child's life and left a child in critical condition, appeared in court on Sunday. Chavez's bail has been set at $250,000 and will include high-level electronic monitoring. As part of the conditions, he is prohibited from driving or consuming alcohol during the ongoing legal proceedings. Additionally, an alcohol monitoring device will be utilized. The incident occurred when Chavez ran a red light at the intersection of Blue Diamond Road and South Las Vegas Boulevard, resulting in multiple vehicle collisions that tragically led to the death of a pregnant woman's baby. The woman and another child involved sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital. The court expressed uncertainty regarding the victims' conditions and their potential for recovery. Chavez admitted to consuming alcohol and marijuana on the day of the crash, although he indicated disagreement when marijuana use was mentioned by officials. His history of a prior DUI conviction in 2021 was a significant factor that the court considered when establishing his bail amount due to concerns about public safety. Chavez is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
