Couple from Commerce City still in hospital a week after fatal Brighton accident
Community members in Lafayette, Colorado are rallying behind a couple from Commerce City who suffered serious injuries in a car accident last week. Jesika and Shawn Ortiz were on their way home from their daughter's softball game when their car was hit head-on at the intersection of East 120th Avenue and Sable Boulevard on Sept. 30. The Ortiz's have been hospitalized with Jesika undergoing emergency surgery for lacerations to her small intestines and a fractured vertebra, while Shawn is recovering from a fractured pelvis and torn chest cartilage. Despite the long road to recovery ahead, the couple is grateful for the overwhelming support from friends and neighbors who have been providing meals for their children and raising funds through a GoFundMe page. The community has also been attending the children's events and games so the Ortiz's can watch from their hospital beds. Jesika is also advocating for increased safety measures at the intersection where the crash occurred, emphasizing the need to prevent further accidents.
