Coroner called after tractor-trailer hits construction vehicles, shuts down Route 581 in Cumberland County

A deadly crash shut down a stretch of Route 581 in Cumberland County on Monday morning, according to PennDOT. Above: PennDOT spokesperson talks to WGAL News 8 on deadly crashes on Route 581 and Pennsylvania TurnpikeIt happened in the eastbound lanes in Camp Hill Borough around 4:30 a.m. on Monday.The crash scene is between Exit 3, Route 11/Carlisle Pike, and Exit 5, Route 15/Gettysburg/Camp Hill.According to PennDOT, a FedEx tractor-trailer drove through a work zone and struck a construction vehicle that was picking up cones.Two contractor employees were inside the construction vehicle at the time, PennDOT said. Both individuals were trapped and had to be extricated by rescue crews.PennDOT initially said that the two workers were transported to the hospital. We have now learned from PennDOT that the crash is deadly. It's unclear how many people were killed. Route 581 closedAll eastbound lanes of Route 581 are closed between Interstate 81 and Exit 5, Route 15/Gettysburg/Camp Hill.The entry ramp from Trindle Road is also closed.PennDOT said a fuel spill and significant amount of debris on the roadway could extend the closure. The estimated time of reopening is unknown. No further details have been released at this time. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is also closed for a deadly crash.
