Concerns rise over safety at Sedgwick County intersection after deadly collision

The recent tragic accident at the intersection of West 29th Street and North 135th Street in Sedgwick County has sparked concerns about safety. Drivers are calling for increased safety measures at this intersection, where Tiffany Jones lost her life after running a stop sign and colliding with an SUV, causing serious injuries. This same intersection was the site of the fatal crash involving Sheriff’s Deputy Sidnee Carter in 2022. Sedgwick County Commissioner Jim Howell has expressed support for installing rumble strips at this location to alert drivers and potentially prevent further accidents. Drivers in the area have also voiced the need for additional stop signs to improve safety and decrease traffic speed. Howell emphasized that most accidents at intersections are a result of inattentive driving, heightened by the current increase in distracted driving due to various factors like higher speeds and more vehicles on the road. It will likely take at least a year to incorporate any proposed improvements into the county budget. Authorities are set to address the situation further in a press conference scheduled for Monday.
