Community demands action after deadly Genesee County crash.
A recent tragic accident at a quiet rural intersection in LeRoy has spurred a new effort for safety improvements after claiming the lives of two individuals from Florida. The incident occurred early Friday morning at the crossing of West Bergen and Griswold Roads, an area known by locals and authorities to be hazardous. The collision took place when 20-year-old Brianna Welsh failed to stop at a stop sign while driving on Griswold Road and collided with a dump truck on West Bergen Road, resulting in the tragic deaths of both her and her passenger, Mallen Mello. This unfortunate event has left nearby residents saddened but not shocked, as they have witnessed multiple accidents at the intersection due to drivers disregarding the stop signs. This incident has prompted community leaders to reexamine traffic conditions at the spot. The Chief Deputy of the Road Patrol for the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, Bryan Friday, acknowledged the intersection's history of issues and expressed the need to conduct another traffic study. Genesee County's Commissioner of the Department of Public Works, Laura Wadhams, confirmed that they are developing a Local Road Safety Plan covering all county roads and intersections, and that in response to the recent accident, they will prioritize finding a suitable solution for the West Bergen and Griswold intersection to enhance safety measures.
