Commemorating Avon Mountain crash 20 years on

Twenty years ago, a tragic incident occurred on Avon Mountain, resulting in a significant impact on the community. The brakes of an American Crushing & Recycling dump truck failed while descending the 500-foot hill on Route 44, leading to a deadly crash involving 20 vehicles. This incident claimed four lives and left many others with physical injuries and lasting mental trauma. Following this terrible event, the owner of the truck company, who was found to be aware of the defective brakes, was sentenced to six years in prison. Since then, the Connecticut Department of Transportation has implemented various safety improvements in the area, such as increased police monitoring of speed, the installation of high-friction pavement and other measures. However, despite these efforts, police have reported ongoing crashes due to excessive speeding. Over the past six years alone, there have been 11 crashes resulting in injuries and 73 additional crashes without injuries in the region. Authorities emphasize the importance of drivers being cautious and reducing speed while navigating Avon Mountain to prevent further tragedies.
