College student, 19, paralyzed in California swimming mishap

A 19-year-old student from San Diego State University is in the midst of a challenging recovery journey following a swimming accident at Pacific Beach that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Ethan McCoy, who aspired to be a physical therapist and was preparing for an Ironman competition, found himself facing this life-altering situation on Aug. 30 while swimming near Crystal Pier. Thankfully, his friends were able to rescue him from the water and get him the necessary help. After undergoing surgery to address three shattered vertebrae in his neck, Ethan's father, Jim McCoy, shared the difficult emotional toll the family has been experiencing in the past few weeks. Ethan, despite the uncertainty of his recovery, has already shown great determination to approach his rehabilitation with the same resilience he displayed in his athletic pursuits during high school. He continues to set ambitious goals for himself, even though doctors have expressed that he may never walk again. Currently, Ethan is in Chicago for specialized rehabilitation, and a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the family with the rising medical costs.
