Closure of I-80 due to suspect causing crash near Salt Lake City
Three lanes on the eastern side of I-80 are currently shut down due to a driver fleeing from law enforcement causing a head-on collision near the I-215 Interchange in Salt Lake City last Saturday morning. The incident unfolded when Salt Lake City Police were chasing a suspect on foot as part of a separate case. The suspect then fled in a vehicle onto the freeway leading to a pursuit. Following multiple reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on I-80, Utah Highway Patrol intervened and the chase was terminated at around 6:00 a.m. after a crash occurred with another vehicle near the I-215 interchange. Both drivers had to be rescued from their vehicles before being taken to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. The investigation into the crash by troopers resulted in the closure of three left lanes on I-80, which have now been reopened. Utah Highway Patrol is also looking into a potential DUI offense by the suspect on top of the offenses being pursued by Salt Lake City Police.
