Cleveland Division of Police investigating shooting turned pursuit that left 5 officers injured
The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating a shooting that turned into a pursuit, leaving five officers injured Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, according to the department.Preliminary information from CPD said that at approximately 2:13 p.m., the fourth district received a call about a man who is about 33-years-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at 5222 Fleet Avenue. Police said he was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.Once officers arrived, they began an investigation and canvassed the area. As officers were looking, they observed a car circling the shooting scene. Officers then obtained information that suggested the car was being driven by a 24-year-old suspect who was involved in the shooting, police said.As officers continued investigating, police said the 24-year-old man is believed to have fired several shots at officers before fleeing the area.One officer was injured by what police believe to be shrapnel-related bullet impacts that struck the vehicle, Cleveland Police said.Shortly after, with the Real Time Crime Center's assistance, officers found the 24-year-old's car near Track Road and Martin Avenue, CPD said.According to police, the car fled and fired at officers again, hitting the windshield of a police cruiser. A second officer sustained injuries consistent with a graze wound from a bullet or shrapnel. Police said one officer shot back at the man in response to the initial gunfire. CPD said officers continued the pursuit to arrest the 24-year-old, which ended near 15617 Chagrin Boulevard after the suspect crashed into a building.The suspect tried to flee on foot, but was taken into custody, police said.Both officers who were injured as a result of gunfire were taken to the hospital. One is in stable condition, and the other was treated and released.According to police, during the chase, one officer was involved in a car accident and struck a tree. Another officer was involved in a separate accident near East 75th Street and Kinsman Road. Both officers were transported to the hospital and are in stable condition. The driver involved in the crash near East 75th self-transported to the hospital for evaluation after refusing EMS. The 24-year-old man was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is expected to be released and transported to the Cuyahoga County Jail. Charges are still pending, police said.The Cleveland Police Force Investigation Team and the Cleveland Police Accident Investigation Unit will investigate the incident.Earlier in the day, News 5 crew found a large police presence at Broadway Avenue just before 4 p.m. and reported that Cleveland Police had closed the entire intersection of Broadway and Union avenues. The police taped off the area and surrounding businesses.Shortly after, our crew arrived at Harvard Road and found the area between East 57th and East 59th Streets blocked due to a motor vehicle accident. More yellow tape and police cruisers were spotted.This story will be updated as more is learned.
