City worker dies after accident at Springfield landfill - KOLR

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- An accident at the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill has left a man dead on Monday, March 24. Springfield officials state the Springfield Police Department and the Ebenezer Fire Protection District responded to the incident at the landfill on 3545 W Farm Road 34 before 11 a.m. According to a press release from the City of Springfield, a city worker was driving an articulated dump truck when it overturned and caught fire. The worker has since been identified as 62-year-old Larry Flett. He was a solid waste operations associate at the Noble Hill landfill for nearly two years and previously served as a Springfield Police Officer from 1989 to 1998, according to the city. “This is a tragic day for the City of Springfield. We are deeply saddened by this death of one of our own and send our sympathies to the Larry Flett family and coworkers. He was an integral part of our team and his loss will be felt. He was a dedicated and loyal public servant,” said interim City Manager Collin Quigley.  The landfill is expected to remain closed through Wednesday. The Department of Environmental Services will internally review Monday's incident.
