A Cincinnati family is heartbroken after a crash killed a mother and daughter during a spring break trip. March 15 is when this family's world shattered. "It's hard for me to believe that they are gone," family member Colleen Newman said. "Who am I going to call and talk to? She was my closest friend."Seventeen-year-old Mattie Newman and her parents, Melissa Darby, known as "Missy," and dad Matthew Newman, were heading to Florida for spring break when their car hit a guardrail in Peach County, Georgia.Mattie and Missy were killed. Matthew, who was driving, remains in the hospital. "He's in pretty bad shape right now. He's surviving," Colleen Newman said.Colleen is Matthew's sister. Colleen and Missy were also lifelong friends. Their bond was unbreakable. "We're not going to have the laughs. I'm not going to have anybody call me and sing happy birthday to me like Missy would do," Colleen Newman said. The loss is heavy on Keelie Lewis. She lost her mother and sister. "No matter where they were, no matter who they were around, they were always having a good time, always showing positivity, always helping people out," Lewis said.Lewis says she's expecting her first child. Mattie and Missy were planning a baby shower. "She was so happy and so excited to be a grandma, and so was Mattie. She was so excited to be an aunt," Lewis said.Mattie was a star volleyball player at Riverside East Academy and a standout student. Athletic director Wes Gerhardt said, "Whatever she set her mind to, she was going to accomplish. She wasn't afraid to work hard, to put in extra hours to meet her goals. She excelled academically, athletically, and socially. She was an amazing, well-rounded, and happy teenager. Mattie was one of those kids that if you knew her, you loved her. She was someone who knew who she was and always stood up for what she believed in. Mattie was also never afraid to be different or to tell you how it was, and never made herself small for others. She brought the energy to every room she walked into. She found empathy for everyone- in all situations, and was the voice of reason for many of her peers."
