Chula Vista man sentenced for involvement in fatal crash during human smuggling bid
A man from Chula Vista has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for his involvement in a deadly high-speed crash that resulted in the deaths of two undocumented immigrants he was smuggling across the border. Sergio Josue Palomera, 23, received a 71-month prison term from U.S. District Judge Todd W. Robinson for the charge of human smuggling resulting in death following a crash in Otay Mesa in 2024. Palomera was apprehended by Border Patrol agents after a brief pursuit that ended in a tragic accident. The impact of his actions was emphasized by U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon, who condemned the defendant for viewing human lives as disposable objects. Judge Robinson described the case as particularly severe, noting the devastating effect on the victims' families. The sentencing reflects the serious consequences of prioritizing profit over human life, serving as a deterrent to those involved in similar criminal activities along the southern border.
