Chinese paraglider unintentionally matches near world record at 28,000 feet

A Chinese paraglider unexpectedly soared to near-record altitudes of over 28,000 feet during a routine equipment test in Gansu province. The 55-year-old, Peng Yujian, was lifted by a powerful updraft, reaching heights compared to commercial airliners. Despite having two years of paragliding experience, Peng was trapped in a cloud system, losing consciousness temporarily due to low oxygen and extreme temperatures. His adventure nearly broke a world record set by a German paraglider in 2007. Authorities initially suspended Peng’s flying privileges for six months. However, backlash on Chinese social media led to the withdrawal of the statement, and it remains uncertain if the suspension is still enforced. Peng expressed relief that his swelling has reduced but still feels numbness in his hands and face. He shared that he is taking a break from flying after the incident.
