Child missing after hit by train, 2 women killed
FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) -- Fremont police on Monday returned to the scene of a train accident that killed two people and injured a child. There is another child still missing. The incident happened Sunday evening near the Miles Newton Bridge, which goes over the Sandusky River in Fremont, nearly 90 minutes west of Cleveland. Fremont Mayor Danny Sanchez said a family from Indiana was in town fishing. At about 7 p.m. on Sunday, they were walking on a bridge off of Hayes Avenue that is only used for trains when they were struck by a train. According to the city's Safety Service Director Kenneth Frost, all four people ended up off the bridge and in the water below. A 14-month-old girl was transported to a Toledo hospital with injuries. The toddler is reportedly in critical condition. According to Frost, the toddler was saved by a good Samaritan who performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Sanchez said in a Monday morning update the girl was flown to a hospital. He offered no update on her condition. A 5-year-old girl is still missing. Witnesses said they saw the child in the water. The girls are believed to be related to the women, Sanchez said. Sanchez said the family was from Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were in town for a fishing trip on the Sandusky River. The four were the only four family members on the trip. Their identities have not been released. According to Frost, officials had challenges getting information to the family because of a language barrier. There are "no trespassing" signs posted on the train bridge. Sanchez said Monday it's not common for pedestrians to be in the area. “We would encourage anyone who sees anyone on the bridge to contact authorities and call 911 right away,” he said. “At this time, the only thing we can continue to do is to pray for these people and their families and our community,” said Sanchez. “We do everything we can to welcome our anglers to the city of Fremont and this is a very, very unfortunate tragedy that has hit our community." Crews spent Sunday night searching the river. The search efforts included the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office dive team, but was temporarily called off. “Most of the teams had to take a break overnight. We had people out continuously watching but so far no results," said Frost. The search has since resumed. Law enforcement boats took to the water at daybreak, said Sanchez. Fire Chief Paul Halbeisen told reporters first responders are using side-scan sonar to locate the missing 5-year-old girl. Multiple fire agencies and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources are assisting in the search, which is extending as far as the Sandusky Bay, Halbeisen said. Crews are focusing the search north of the scene, following the direction of the river's flow, Halbeisen said. “It’s a broad-spectrum search area, but with the resources that we currently have and we’re utilizing, we’re pretty confident we can cover that area. It’s just a matter of time,” he said. The National Transportation Safety Board is also involved with the investigation, Sanchez said. On Monday morning, the rail line operator Norfolk Southern sent a statement to FOX 8 News which reads: "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts are with those affected, their loved ones, and the community during this difficult time. We are working closely with local authorities on their investigation."
