Child in critical condition after accident in driveway; family advocates for safety

A 2-year-old girl named Iris from Douglasville is currently hospitalized after a tragic accident. The family shared their story in hopes of raising awareness and preventing similar incidents. While in Cobb County, Iris' mom, Christen Wilson, accidentally backed out of the driveway not realizing Iris was outside the car. In a frantic moment, Christen found Iris on the ground and began CPR, and Iris is now in a medically induced coma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The family wants to caution others about the dangers of potential miscommunications that led to this accident, emphasizing the importance of ensuring children are not near vehicles before driving. In response to the incident, the family has launched a GoFundMe to support Iris' medical treatment. Christen, who is the main caregiver, has been constantly by Iris' side. Kids and Car Safety reports that 50 children in the U.S. are involved in backover accidents every week, with the driver often being a family member. The organization emphasizes safety measures like checking around and under the car before moving, minimizing distractions, and teaching children to avoid playing near vehicles to prevent backover accidents.
