Charges pressed against Utah man for fatal 2022 I-80 collision
A man from Utah is now under charges as a result of an investigation into a deadly crash that occurred along Interstate 80 in 2022. Ricardo Aceves, aged 22, has been charged with second-degree felony manslaughter. As per court documents, on July 23, 2022, the Utah Highway Patrol responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Interstate 80 close to 7200 West. Witnesses informed investigators that they observed a BMW speeding before losing control and flipping over the median, subsequently hitting a Ford Explorer before coming to a stop. Reports indicate that Aceves was driving the BMW after leaving Fuel Fest in Tooele County when the crash took place. Investigators found a GoPro inside the vehicle which allegedly recorded Aceves driving recklessly as he accessed I-80. Troopers stated that Aceves made several illegal maneuvers, reaching speeds of up to 186 miles per hour and engaging in races with other vehicles on the highway. The investigators mentioned that at high speeds, the BMW's rear right tire suffered tread separation, causing Aceves to lose control and veer into the median, resulting in the vehicle rolling, being launched into the air, catching fire, and then hitting the Ford Explorer. At the time of the accident, it was reported that the BMW was traveling at over 129 miles per hour. In the vehicle with Ricardo Aceves was Gino Aceves, Jose Munoz, and another passenger known as J.M. Ricardo and Gino Aceves were both thrown from the vehicle during the crash, while Jose Munoz managed to exit the vehicle later. Unfortunately, J.M. was unable to escape and tragically lost their life.
